A special squad of the Cook County sheriff's police detonated a bomb at a Prospect Heights business Sunday afternoon, spreading shrapnel 350 feet.

An employee of Paradise Banquets, at 1392 E. Rand Road, called police around 1 p.m. with the report of the explosive.

"They found what was believed to be a pipe bomb near their door," Deputy Chief Eric Lundt said.

The employees of the banquet hall and an adjacent strip mall were evacuated, Lundt said, and Rand Road was closed to traffic from Olive to Thomas streets.

The bomb squad detonated the pipe bomb after employees had left the area.

Pete Speer, co-owner of the Yoshi Hana Japanese restaurant across the street, said at least one piece of shrapnel landed in the restaurant parking lot after the explosion.

The roads remained blocked off while the bomb squad checked for other possible explosives, but nothing was found.

"It was done as a precautionary measure," Lundt said.

Police had no suspects and a motive was not immediately apparent after initial investigation, he said.

Lundt added that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also was called to the area.

Police left the scene close to 4:45 p.m., when the roads were reopened.

Speer said that only the businesses on the banquet hall side of the street were closed for the nearly four hours police were investigating.

An employee of Paradise Banquets said an event planned for 2 p.m. at the hall was canceled while police remained at the scene. The nature of the event was not revealed at the time.

The owner of the business was not available Sunday night for comment
