Hello, MrMudd! Glad to see you over here!
May I ask a question, that have been hotly discussed at one Russian aviation forum? Can F-15 safely perform the tail-slide maneuver? There is an oppinion that F-15 engines can't work in such regime and will stop if you try it.
MrMudd:
F100-PW100 the First engines in the 15A's and they were very tempermental. Transient slams and HIgh AOA manuevering cause Stalls and stagnations and so did High altitudes/High Mach. Shutting down the engine in flight wsa the best option and not a very good idea in a Fight. You would have to wait until the engine cooled to operation temps before restarting. I think we averaged 10 Stall/Stags for every 1000 Eagle hours. The Engines were constantly getting pulled becasue of damage to the differnt sections. We were asking this engine to cover a very broad range and the Ramps sometimes were not enough to control the velocities intakeing tothe engine. and mostly they were getting blocked casueing loss of airflow at critical times.
The F100-PW220 has slightly less thrust of the 100. But you could slam the throttles From Mil to AB as much as you wanted and not have any penalty. there is even a switch that allows Full AB +4% at mach 2.5+ but that requires a short duration and Engine inspection.
The 220 has a signifigant advantage over the PW100 for what were asking the F15C to do.
Would a Tailslide cause a Stall stagnation in todays engine? No unless you were at idle and somehow their wasnt enough Vacuum pressure into the engine. Honestly their is absolutely no reason in combat to stop in midair and fall through in a departure. to do so would make you a very tasty an enjoyable target. If your not manuevering then your not handling your buisness. Does the Eagle have any system to prevent a tail slide. absolutely not. Theirs plenty of control and manueverability to kill you and put you in a smoking hole if your so inclined to be stupid.
The failsafes are in AOA warning Tones (I supplied many of them to Matt last year) and in a departure symbology page that will automatically display in the MPCD and give you guidance in corrective control, But it will absolutely not limit the jet like a Fly by wire jet (F16)
The eagle is flown by skill, their is no magic box to do it for you.
