Today is August 1st: Lilya Litvyak
I'm sure many of you know who Lilya Litvyak is, so I won't post a short bio here like I did on the UBI forums. However, on August 1st, 1943, she perished in combat.
Please take some time out of your day to reflect on the first female air combat ace in the world. She is a symbol, not only for Russia, but for women and men across the globe. Thank you very much, and I wish I could have posted this in Russian.

PBNA-Boosher
Thank you many times,Boosher!!!!

Beautiful girl, brilliant pilot.

Thanks dear PBNA-Boosher!
You are very good man.

Your English is fine Serp. (My Russian is horrible, I only know Da, Nyet, and Dosvidanya) In my spare time I study Russian history, and when I stumbled upon Lilya's story, I was amazed and thrilled. Her life was very interesting, and it's amazing how much of a love story it was, as well as the story of a woman who let nothing get in her way. She had a very strong character. I look up to people like that. The same goes for Natalya Meklin, Katya Budanova, Raisa Yushina, and who could forget Marina Raskova? These women are exceptional people. As of late I have been trying to teach that to my country. (But who in the USA will listen to a 16 year old kid?) You may say you're grateful to me, and I definitely believe you, but the spirit your country has is unsurpassed by any I have ever known. I owe you more respect than you owe me.

At us the same as and at you not everyone know the II World war.
Therefore it is very pleasant for me to see such person,
which not only studies the History, but still it and
propagandizes.
You on a correct rate! :)

At first, let me thank you Boosher for all that you posted above.
At next, I think, for you may be interesting the history of Russian women fighter unit of World War II - 586 IAP. You can read about it in Avia Master magazine № 3 / 2000 («АвиаМастер» № 3 за 2000 г.). The article named “women faces of air war” (Женские лица воздушной войны) tells about life and fight of fighter unit, that Lilya Litvyak and Ekaterina Budanova came from. Maybe (I hope) you can buy it here www.armybook.com (books, magazines, models from Russia). If not, write here and I’ll try to help you somehow.
Best wishes, and thank you again,
Ivanych
PS. Of course, it’s on Russian. But I hope, you can solve translate problem. If not, again – write here.

I believe I have read a similar article titled "Female Faces of the Air War" online. I have the file saved to my laptop at home. It was a very good article as well. However, the two may be different. I'll check it out. Thanks for the link!

Re: Today is August 1st: Lilya Litvyak
Hi all,
My name is Helene and i'm french, i was searching for infomation about women WWII USSR pilots when i seen this thread... of year 2004... but i don't know where to ask for further informations and such things. In fact i speak just a little bit of Russian (words and common sentences, some verbs etc.) and a bad english (school). I'm nearly pilot (not yet licensed but... i fly and i know how to fly "my" aeroplane) and i see that like a memory duty to the former pilots (not only women).
I also wanted to add that russians were not the first women pilot to fight but the fisrt officially recognized, before them, during First World War there was Marie Marvingt who figth in the "1er Groupe de Bombardement" (First Bomb Squadron). She was born in 1875 in Aurillac, France but lived most part of her childhood in Nancy were an high school and a gymnasium have her name, in France she is not really well known, there is a lot of aviatrix that we could talk about but Marie was not only an aviatrix, she was an athlete, she won many prize, espacially in 1908, 1909 and 1910 at winter olympic games, she was given the medal for all sport by the french sport academy (never given before or after to men or women) she made the "tour de France" alone because it was forbiden to her because she was a woman, for 1911 to 1914 she developed the idea of the medical aviation, she had found the ingenior and the builder but the builder had financial problems and the idea was forgoten. In 1914 when the war begun she engaged as a male infantryman in the 42 BCA (Bataillon de Chasseurs à Pied / Alpin) under the nickname of "Beaulieu" with the complicity of a lieutnant. After she served as nurse for the red cross and went to the 1st GB in 1915, she made something else but even in french i've difficulties to understand that so... After first war she went to north Africa to serve as war correspondent, she could develop air ambulances, during world war two i think she served as a nurse but i'm not sure, after, in 1948 she invented an association for injuried pilots, she did more than 6000 conferences about air ambulances, when she was 80 years old she made a flight in reaction helicopter, for her 86 years she made Paris - Nancy riding a bike and she died in 1963 at the age of 88.
I would like to be able to tell as much things about Ekaterina Budanova, Lilya Lytvak etc. but i have no information :(

Hello Dewoitine D520! If you e-mail me at my e-mail address I would gladly send you what information I have. It's too much for me to post on the forum itself.

Re: Today is August 1st: Lilya Litvyak
I think 50% of Litvyak glory was propaganda. I hawe Memoirs of real WW2 weteran about Litvyak covering, she was on LAGG (or Yak) and few mans cover her on I-153. And Komissar told, if she die, dont come back.
But even 50% enough to respect her.
Many women battled in night bomb squads on PO-2 planes, and on PE-2
-
Re: Today is August 1st: Lilya Litvyak
Of course a lot of it was propaganda, they needed to exploit what they could to get common support for the war, however:
-Litvyak started on Po-2's, trained on them, then instructed others in them, finally making her way to Raskova's regiments.
-After initial training with the 586 IAP, she was transferred with other pilots, like Yekaterina Budanova, to different regiments along the front lines.
-The 586 IAP was a Yakovlev squadron, and they flew Yaks from the beginning of their careers to the end of the war. Litvyak was transferred to a squadron that flew the La-5 for a brief time (take note that the LaGG and La series are different planes) After being in a few different air regiments, Litvyak transferred to the 296 IAP. Here she flew more Yaks, the Yak-1 and Yak-1b. She DID fly Yakovlev aircraft for her duration of the war. As far as I know I have not found anything stating she flew any other aircraft in combat other than the La-5 and Yaks.
-The official word until Gorbachev came to power was that Litvyak, whose body was not yet found, had become a prisoner-of-war and therefore, an undesirable traitor. When they later found her body she was given a place of honor.
The women who flew the Pe-2 planes were part of the 125th Guards Bomber Regiment. The regiment was actually not all female, and a lot of men served in the crews and regiment. In fact, the CO was male.
The women who flew the Po-2/U-2VS were part of the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Regiment. This was the only all-female regiment of the group of three.

Sunday is the day of surprises :) I've never thought that somebody in the USA is interested in such a question. All my respects for you, PBNA-Boosher and Dewoitine D520! :bravo:
I don't have any useful information about Lilya Litvyak (shame on me) I just want to say that you're really good! Your written Russian is understandable but your signature... check your grammar :)
Thanks for your interest :)

И было бы неплохо выразить свой "respects" ещё Dewoitine D520, которая "...My name is Helene and i'm french..." - эту старую темку подняла. Жаль, что в английском я не силён...:ups:
