"During those exercises some of the SAAF fighter pilots flew with the russian against the South Africans.My father drew a ticket and flew in the SU-30/SU-35 (I cant remember exactly now...the 2-seater) and was in a 2v1 engagement with cheetah C's..and i recall him saying..they flew circles around the cheetahs...and that the fights would be over 30seconds after the initial cross with 2 C's dead everytime.The shear manoeuvreability of the sukhois and the capable radar meant that the C's were no match. I certainly believe that our Fighter pilots were/are some of the best in the world, and the russians were highly impressed with the skills,tactics and generally superior Combat Flying ability that the SAAF fighter pilots possessed..

It was no wonder after that specific ACM sortie..the russian pilot (Victor) jumped out and hugged my father...in awe of how well a SAAF fighter pilot could learn to fly a foreign machine so quickly and apply it in Air Combat better than the russians did themselves. A testament to the excellent Fighter training the SAAF had."
