Donald Bryan " I had shared the kill of an Fw190 near Frankfurt in late January 1944. We came at each other head-on, and I ducked behind that steel out in front of me and opened fire on him. I saw some hits, and we rattle around a bit, and finally, the guy bailed out. The fight had started high - above 20000 feet. This is where the P-47 reigned supreme over the Bf109s and Fw 190s; but once went below 18000 feet, things changed in a hurry - and they weren't favorable changes! The 109s and 190s could outperform the P-47 at these lower altitudes. Highly skilled and motivated pilots who knew how to exploit their strangths and our weakness were still operating in Luftvaffe.
