In New Guinea, A-20s bomb the area from Garrison Hill to the Komiatum Track and
B-17s hit the Wewak area. B-24s carry out individual attacks at Salamaua. In the
Bismarck Archipelago, B-24s carry out individual attacks on a cargo vessel in
Open Bay and a nearby village in New Britain Island. In the Dutch East Indies,
B-24s in individual attacks bomb a transport off Amboina, Ambon Island. HQ 3d
Bombardment Group (Dive) and its 8th Bombardment Squadron (Dive) with A-20s and
90th Bombardment Squadron (Dive) with B-25s transfer from Charters Towers,
Queensland, Australia to Port Moresby, New Guinea.

B-25's attack targets of opportunity from Bogia to Cape Croisilles, New Guinea.
On New Britain Island, A-20's attack in the Cape Gloucester area; P-40's hit the
airfield at Hoskins; and P-39's strafe barges in Rein Bay. HQ 417th Bombardment
Group (Light) and 672d, 673d, 674th and 675th Bombardment Squadrons (Light)
arrive at Cape Sudest, New Guinea from the US with A-20's; first mission is 27
March.
In Singapore, Percival summons his commanders and finds he
has no reserves. He orders his men to retreat to Singapore across
the 1,100-yard causeway. As the exhausted troops come shuffling
back, they find the impregnable fortress is one only in name.
Only one 15-inch gun points northward, and it's equipped with
armor-piercing shot, useless against troops.
Russian Marshal Konstantin Timoshenko advances into the
Ukraine. The Ukrainians are happy to see him, as the Nazis have
been practicing massacres. In the Crimean city of Feodosiya, the
Nazis hang 36 captured partisans. In Dzhankoi, the Gestapo
arrests 76 "suspicious people," and shoots 76 after
interrogation.
In North Africa, sandstorms are replaced by pouring rain.
Rommel leads his men from the front, keeping the panzers pushing
west.
Rommel's troops enter Benghazi as the British retreat. The
city changes hands for the fourth time. One more to go. German
troops find most of the city in ruins, but the cinema is intact,
so they all troop up to see a rerun of "Victory in the West," a
Nazi propaganda film, which is better than nothing.
The "Mighty 8th" US Army Air Force is formed in Georgia.
They will go on to bomb Germany.
CENTRAL PACIFIC (Hawaiian Air Force): B-17's of Task Group 8.9 fly an
unsuccessful antisubmarine mission from Canton in the Phoenix

B-24s, B-25s, A-20s and fighter-bombers concentrate attacks on Luzon Island, the heaviest tonnage (from B-24s) falling on Corregidor Island in Manila Bay; Cavite and targets between Manila and Subic Bay, including Laoag Airfield, are also hit; A-20s concentrate on targets in the Aparri-Gattaran area while fighter-bombers and A-20s hit airfields in the Cagayan Valley and troops, trucks, and roads in the San Felipe and Talavera areas. HQ 91st Photographic Wing (Reconnaissance) moves from Leyte Island to Mindoro Island.
January 28th, 1942...Another big day for the US Navy as the
aircraft carrier USS Enterprise becomes the first heavy ship to
refuel at sea by night, doing so in the central Pacific at 8 p.m.
from the oiler USS Platte, under blackout conditions. The
evolution takes five hours, and is successful.
