If this is the problem with the R-27AE, then I don't understand how the R-77 can be considered an improvement.Originally posted by Chizh

Even less modification should be necessary to permit use of R-27AE. R-27AE has even more in common with existing Su-27 armament, than R-77: same pylons, same rocket motor, same range for "PR" HUD signal, G-limit at moment of launch, etc.
IMHO the compromise already exists - Su-27 in Lock On carries R-27AE. R-77, the fact is known that the Su-27 doesn't carry it. Just as A-10 doesn't carry HARM, and Canadian F-18 and US F-14 don't carry AIM-120. To introduce the R-77 to Lock On, western users will bombard with similar requests for other aircraft.
With R-27AE, IMHO there is enough uncertainty to make a compromise. I can confirm that this missile was in real production (at least, for export) in Ukraine. Ukraine has no Su-35. Is it possible to use R-27AE with standard Su-27? Maybe the Su-27 radar doesn't need to know if it carries active or passive missiles - R-27AE may theoretically be built with "reverse-compatibility" to R-27ER, and be launched using the same software. R-77 would require the software to be programmed with its flight characteristics.
Well, I predict the following:Если этого не сделать, у F-15 с AIM-120 появляется очень большое преимущество.
Balance with Su-27+R-27AE - western users will accept that maybe it's possible.
Balance with Su-27+R-77 - western users will riot.
IMHO, the ideal approach to the balance with F-15 is to concentrate on the MiG-29S. Improve the avionics to allow automatic capture from СНП regime. Then, make it possible for two targets, using R-77. Then, make the effects of ECM appear in the HUD, and force both of the opponents to enter ББ range. Then, add the lock-on-jam capability described in the MiG-29 flight manual. After such improvements, and together with radio datalink to compensate for decreased radar range, MiG-29S should be a very capable opponent to F-15C.
Other possibilities are to improve the characteristics of R-27EM with Su-33, or to add R-27P/EP for Su-27.
