15 Good points of Lockheed P-38
1. Basic wing design - stall, lift, vol..etc
2. Center line fire of guns - good armament
3. Good forward visibility
4. Counter- rotatiing propellers to conteract torque and imprive stability.
5. Turbosupercharging
6. Structural strength.
7. Low basic drag
8. High lift wing and flap configuration
9. Good tricycle landing gear with ample size tires
10. Ease of hanging on external stores of all types.
11. Compressibility control flap
12. Power boost ailerons
13. Lack of any flatter characteristics.
14. Favorable slipstream effect
15. Reasonable size cockpit


15 Bad points of the Lockheed P-38.
1. Engine problems.
A. Back-firing - blew wing intercooler
B. Cooling - 3L - spark plugs
C. Solid fuel!!! - glass lines
2. Wing intercooler - OK for 1000hp, but not enough cooling for higher power - waited too long to go to conventional intercooler.
3. Compressibility limit Mach 0.68 to 0.7 - wing thickness shape, and induced fuselage nacelle flow field the cause.
4. Insufficient cockpit heat!!!
5 High aileron forces until power boost used.
6. Tail clearance for pilot on parachute bail out - elevator counterweights in the way.
7. Accessibility to engine and equipment in booms poor - very crowded.
8. Sun heat effect on Curtiss propeller circuit breakers - difficulty in going around field with engine over-revving.
9. Turbosupercharger over-revving - use of a tachometer - metal deflector ring - special CLJ rigging of throttle.
10. Inability to use a tubine hood to get exhaust thrust - supercharger wouldn't take any back pressure.
11. Supply problems with two kinds of engine gear boxes and propellers to get counter rotation required.
12. Insufficient rear vision.
13. Difficult pilot entrance and exit provisions.
14. Hard to builf - very tight tolerances and jigging requied.
15 Sensitivity of wing fillet fits - difficult to maintain.
