"At the Split-S Society's P-38 symposium in September, 1977, Kelly Johnson commented on several good and bad qualities of the P-38.
15 Good Points of the Lockheed P-38
Basic wing design - stall, lift, vol, etc.
Center line fire of guns - good armament.
Good forward visibility.
Counter-rotating propellers to counteract torque and improve stability.
Turbosupercharging.
Structural strength.
Low basic drag.
High lift wing and flap configuration.
Good tricycle landing gear with ample size tires.
Ease of hanging external stores of all types.
Compressibility control flap.
Power boost ailerons.
Lack of flutter characteristics.
Favorable slipstream effects.
Reasonable sized cockpit.
15 Bad Points of the Lockheed P-38
Engine problems.
Wing intercooler - not enough cooling for high power (waited too long to convert to conventional intercooler).
Compressibility limit Mach 0.68 to 0.7 - wing thickness shape, and induced fuselage nacelle flow field the cause.
Insufficient cockpit heat!!!
High aileron forces unit power boost used.
Tail clearance for pilot on parachute bail out - elevator counterweights in the way.
Accessibility to engine and equipment in booms poor - very crowded.
Sun heat effect on Curtis propeller circuit breakers - difficulty in going around field with engines over-revving.
Turbosupercharger over-revving.
Inability to use a turbine hood to get exhaust thrust - supercharger would not take any back pressure.
Supply problems with two kinds of engine gear boxes and propellers to get counter rotation.
Insufficient rear vision.
Difficult pilot entrance and exit provisions.
Hard to build - very tight tolerances and jigging required."
И еще - P-38 был почти в два раза дороже P-51.
