Rheinmetall Defence Electronics and IAI Missiles Division Sign Cooperation Agreement for Leopard 1 and 2 MBT Upgrade

(Source: Rheinmetall DeTec; issued June 15, 2004)

EUROSATORY, Paris --- Today Bremen-based Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH (RDE), Germany, and IAI/MBT Missiles Division (MBT), Israel, signed a cooperation agreement to jointly offer an upgrade kit for the Leopard 1 and 2 Main Battle Tank with a gun-launched laser homing weapon system (LAHAT).
Mr. Heinz Dresia, RDE's Chairman of the Management Board, Mr. Moshe Keret, IAI's President & CEO, and Mr. Shimon Eckhaus, IAI's Corporate VP Marketing & Business Development, signed the agreement.

The LAHAT upgrade extends the effective range of the tank to over 6,000 meters, providing pinpoint precision kill capability against armored targets. The LAHAT weapon system is a cost-effective upgrade that is easily installed in the Leopard tank, and it offers considerable increases to the effective firepower and the survivability of the tank.

The Rheinmetall subsidiary RDE is a leading European manufacturer of defence electronic systems and the developer of the Leopard 2 fire control system. IAI/MBT is a leading manufacturer of advanced missile systems and the developer of LAHAT, a precision guided gun-fired missile for 105/120 mm guns and launchers.
LAHAT is a spot homer, not a beam rider like the Svir/Refleks series GLGMs. IAI's videos clearly show LAHAT being fired from high registers, and STRIKING the target at greater than 30 degree obliquity.
LAHAT can be designated by any suitable laser designator. Self-designation is only possible if the FCS is equipepd with a designator. The Leopard will need a designator module to achieve this.
