UEFA EURO 2004TM: First quarter-final match dedicated to the UEFA/ICRC "protect children in war" campaign.
The 24 June will be a special day in the joint UEFA/ICRC initiative to raise awareness of the need to protect and help children affected by war. The centre circle flag for the first quarter-final match will feature the campaign logo "Let us Play". The Portuguese Red Cross will distribute "Play by the Rules" baseball caps, pins and flyers. Over 2,000 children will release balloons with the logo in Lisbon. The 65,000 ticket-holders will receive campaign pins.
Throughout the tournament referees will wear the campaign logo on their sleeves. One out of the four campaign spots will be broadcast on giant screens at each match and the official EURO 2004 TM programme will carry a feature article on the campaign. The Portuguese Red Cross will provide first aid cover at 14 matches.
This is the first time UEFA has offered a campaign platform to a humanitarian cause at its flagship tournament. In the view of UEFA chief executive, Lars-Christer Olsson, supporting the ICRC's efforts to help children who are victims of war is a reflection of UEFA's own values. Sport, and in particular football, has proved highly effective, in the words of ICRC communication director, Yves Daccord, in the rehabilitation, both physical and mental, of children who have been damaged by war.
The joint UEFA/ICRC campaign has four simple messages. Children who are separated from their families must be protected and everything possible done to reunite them. They need care to help their physical and psychological recovery. Children are entitled to have their basic needs met through the provision of shelter, food, water, clothing, medical care and education. They must not be recruited into armed forces or groups, nor allowed to take a direct part in hostilities.
Four leading international referees are acting as ambassadors during the campaign. A referee's role is to ensure that players respect the rules of the game. The ICRC works to ensure that those fighting a war respect the law of armed conflict.
The joint programme was initially launched at a news conference in November 2003 with Pierluigi Collina (Italy) serving as the first campaign ambassador. In February 2004, Anders Frisk (Sweden), Markus Merk (Germany), and Lubos Michel (Slovakia) also came on board. They travelled to Sierra Leone in March to see ICRC activities to help children who had lived through war. While there they refereed a match for children with Sierra Leonean referee Denis Sorie. The ambassadors are also featured in the four giant screen spots that will be shown in the stadium on 24 June.
The special 'Let us Play' symbol, drawn from a child's perspective, was created to communicate the desire of children to be able to experience the fun and joy of football rather than suffer the consequences of war."
