- http://www.ausairpower.net/air-superiority-3.htmlThe nose radar bay can be filled with broadband absorber material behind the antenna, and if a phased array is used, it can be tilted up slightly to bounce the return upward. A "tuned" or bandpass radome, transmissive in the AI radar's band alone, can significantly reduce nose area RCS to out of band threats like early warning radars, AEW&C and SAM guidance radars.
- http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...craft/f-22.htmEven the helmet of a pilot is enough of a protrusion to create a significant radar signature. In an attempt to stop this from happening these types of energy absorbent materials are applied to the canopy of the aircraft so that the energy is deflected off that edgeless part of the aircraft rather than having the energy penetrate the canopy and reflect directly off the pilot and the instruments. There is one unfortunate problem to this. Since the material is created to reflect electromagnetic energy, it will also reflect the energy that is radiating from inside the cockpit, mainly visible light. This becomes a problem in night operations because a glair is created from the instruments.
This radar is considered one of the most advanced because it is an active-element, electronically scanned array. This means that unlike a conventional radar that has to rotate to scan an area of space, the APG-77 has no moving parts. In fact, most mechanical parts have been removed from the array making it more reliable and easier to maintain.
