MERCHANT VARIETY PACK, Early War Edition, V1.0

*************************

This mod adds more than 100 new textures for use with the merchant ship models in Silent Hunter 3. The new skins are historically accurate, whenever possible, and represent the liveries of several dozen companies from nine different nations. Semi-random changes to merchant ships are possible using CRULL's batch file (included). The present installment features uncamoflaged prewar skins for the following merchant vessels:

T-3
T-2
Small Tanker
Troop Transport
Coastal Merchant
Small Merchant
C-2
C-3
Passenger Liner

INSTALLATION

Please read the instructions carefully. If you do not you may end up deleting crucial data files, forcing a reinstallation of the game. The method you use will depend on where SH3 is installed on your hard drive.
There are three possible installation methods. For all three, back up the original tga's in your data\sea folder. After that, put NPPLD.tga and NKC3.tga in data\textures\tnormal\tex. The two methods follow:

1. For users with SH3 installed to C:\SilentHunterIII. You do not need the SilentHunterIII folder included with the RAR archive if you use this method. Place the MVP folder into your main Silent Hunter 3 directory. Go to the folder and find the shortcut to the batch file. Paste this shortcut to your desktop and click on it to run SH3. You should see a command prompt window notifying you of the files being copied. Once the process is complete, press any key to start the game. To ensure that you do not encounter identical merchant ships on each patrol, alt-tab out of Silent Hunter 3 (while in the main menu) and run the batch file again, but without pressing a key to restart the game. Just click on the minimized SH3 window to continue. Alternatively, you can exit from the game completely and click on the batch file. This will generate a new batch of textures for the merchants. SH3.exe by itself cannot load a new sequence of skins.

2. For users with SH3 installed to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII, or any other location on Drive C. Place the SilentHunterIII folder in drive C:\, NOT C:\Program Files or your Silent Hunter III directory. Place the MVP folder in your Silent Hunter III root directory. Find the shortcut to the batch file in the MVP folder and paste it to your desktop. To load a batch of skins you must click on this shortcut and then close the command prompt window entirely after it finishes copying the skins - do not allow SH3.exe to run. Then go to the C:\SilentHunterIII directory that you created. You should see a randomly generated batch of properly-named skins in each individual unit folder. Transfer the folders' contents to the data\sea folder of your real SH3 installation.
IMPORTANT:
If you have WindowsXP you can select all the folders with your mouse and then copy and paste them to your SilentHunterIII\data\sea folder, since only the existing tga's will be overwritten. You will be warned that any files with similar names will be replaced; click OK. If you do NOT have Windows XP you may need to copy and paste the tga's to each folder separately instead of pasting them en masse. This is because other operating systems may replace the unit folders in their entirety when they are pasted into the data\sea folder. You will then be stuck with the new tga's in otherwise empty folders without the .dat and .sim files needed to run the game, and will need to reinstall the program. If your OS does NOT give the warning that files with similar names alone will be replaced you must paste all the individual tga's to each of the unit folders separately, without pasting any of the folders.
As in the previous installation method, you can alt-tab out of SH3 from the game's main menu in order to load new skins. Again, do not allow the batch file to load Sh3.exe; when the batch file finishes copying tga's and you're prompted to press any key to continue, simply close the command prompt window and maximize SH3 again.

3. For users without a hard drive named C:\ on their machines. Rename the individual skins and place them in the game's data\sea\[unit] folders. Here are the designations for the different ship types:

B:C-2
C:Coastal Merchant
D:T-2
E:T-3
F:Small Tanker
G:Victory Ship
H:Small Merchant
Jassenger Liner
K:Troopship

For instance, the skin designated E1.tga should be renamed NOTMS__T01.tga and placed in the data\sea\NOTMs_ folder to overwrite the default tga.
With this method, you don't need the batch file or its icon. You will not see semi-random changes to the merchant shipping, and will probably encounter the same merchantmen on each patrol unless you manually alter the tga files' numbers.
