Im relatively new to IL2. Have had the game for about 2 weeks. I have been looking for a realistic WWII Sim and was referred to this game. Although very realistic in terms of procedure, i felt the flight models (especially American models, F4U, P51, P40, P47.. etc) were way too dynamically unstable. What i have found, you simmers call "The Wobbles". I did a search on this site and other sites and found the unlimited lengthy threads regarding the instability (some recognizing, some dont notice, and some like to argue..lol) so i decided to hold my own test.
First let me tell you a bit about myself. Im an Airline Pilot for a well known airline and a Warbird buff. I hold an Airline Transport Rating, Mutli-Engine, with several jet type ratings including 737, CRJ and a few turboprops (King Air's... etc). I also hold a Certifed Flight Instructor certificate with Instrument Instructor and Mutli-engine Instructor endorsements. I have about 7800 Total time with about 5000 in Jets (not really sure, i stopped logging hours in my book about 3 years ago). I have flown the P51D, The F4U and a B-17 along with the various civilian aircraft from 152's to GIV's to ratings listed above. I also have many hours training and flying aerobatics in the Extra 300S. As a side note, i normally wouldnt post my quals, but after reading some of the "wobble" threads, its obvious there are differing opinions on "The Wobbles".
"The Wobbles" as you know them are due to the flight model being designed with increased dynamic instability about its CG (Center of Gravity) with each consecutive patch.
The wobbles are definitely there occuring from patch 401m and on. This was my test.
I uninstalled all PF+FB+AEP. I deleted the "leftovers" in my explorer. I reinstalled each as suggested in the installtion thread. After each install, i played a QMB with first the P40 for FB. Then I installed AEP and flew the same QMB. Then installed PF and flew the same QMB and added a QMB with the F4U and P51D. Then I installed 303m, 401m, 402m, 403m playing each QMB in between each patch with the following tests.....
Once loaded and flying in QMB I would push hard right rudder at 400kph, straight and level, then release and count the oscillations before returning to center. The first push to the right being number 1, swing to left being number 2, swing to right being 3 and so on...
I found that FB+AEP+PF without patches would create 2 oscillations before returning to center with all aircraft mentioned above. This being more on the realistic side.
I found that FB+AEP+PF with Patch 303m had the same result, 2 oscillations. Push hard right, swing to left, center. Again, somewhat realistic.
I found that 401m and subsequent patches (402m, 403m), oscillations increased to six. Push hard right, release, left, right, left, right, center. Very dynamically unstable and unrealistic.
Each oscillation decreasing progressively of course with FB+AEP+PF+303m (and before) being most stable.
Conclusion,
The American flight models tested were effected significantly after the 401m patch install to have an inhert dynamic instablity about the longitudinal axis with an excess aft CG compared to the real flight model (or any aircraft i have flown for that matter). Stalls on these aircraft after the 401m patch also are unrealistic as once the stall is broken the flight models are susceptible to increased sensitivity for secondary stalls. Now secondary stalls are a possiblity in real aircraft if you dont fully break a stall. But once a stall is fully broken and the airframe is flying it should take the same amount of upset to enter another stall as the initial stall. This is not the case with 401m and above flight models. In order to fly these aircraft you have to be smoother than real aircraft. When i first flew these models after my first install two weeks ago, all that came to my mind was Tom Hanks in Apollo 13 saying, "Its like trying to fly with an elephant on your back". Out of all the aircraft i have flown, i have never once flown with an elephant on my back except in IL2. That said, its still a great WWII sim. It just needs "retro-tweaks" back to 303m stall behavior. Hope this helps some of you.
