Question please - Шранк - type of flap?

Шранк as fitted to the Як-52, could not find this in any of my dictionaries.

The spelling "Шранк" is directly from the pilot's instructions for the Як-52 at http://www.avion.ru/

It appears in the section used to describe the type of flap fitted to this machine. I am yet to see a photo of a Як-52 with its flaps down but the best I can ascertain is they are fitted with what is known in English as a "Split Flap". Launch Oleg's IL2 and have a look at the Як-3, this is a split flap design.

Can I assume Шранк = Split?

In thirties Oskar Schrenk, a German, studied what is called split flap design in US. Considering a lot of interaction between Soviet and German engineers at that time and the fact that German was the language of academia I don't think it's surprising that split flaps are called flaps of Schrenk type in Russia.

А посадочный щиток (типа Шренк эз фиттэд на Як-52) по английски тоже флапс? (я не глумлюсь, а спрашиваю, потому что не знаю)
Ваще есть принципиальная разница между закрылками (которые флапс как на Ме-109) и посадочными щитками (которые по ходу пьессы тоже флапс как на Ли-2).

По теме...
На Як-52 установлен щиток типа Шренк... Тоесть шренк это тип щитка и ничто иное...

Типов всяких масса и я даже не осмелюсь их перечислять, так как знаний в этом аспекте нехватает...

Т.е. если есть просто заморочка как правильно перевести на буржуйский язык, то будет of "Srenk" type...

Здесь таже проблема что с килем и vertical stabilizer. Прямой перевод не работает. Так вроде уже разобрались - посадочные щитки типа Schrenk = split flaps.

shrank past от shrink

shrink (shrank; shrunk) сжиматься, садиться, уменьшаться

Т.е. разумно было бы предположить следующий вариант...

Shrink flaps - утапливаемые в крыло щитки...

Many thanks to all, especially LtAK but my friend, I am not an American :) I'm an Australian :) To us this is like suggesting Russians are the same as Germans :)

I like the Oskar Schrenk theory and I'm happy this is the Russian nomenclature for what 'we' know as split flaps.

This sort of thing is interesting to me...ie the nomenclature used on Russian designed aircraft and the idiosyncrasies they have. Examples: pneumatic engine starting for piston engine aeroplanes (not common outside Russia), the multiple use of components such instruments like the APK-15M or engines such as the M14P etc etc, it is a long list!

Actually I was referring to the fact that I am speaking American English, of course I can try to imitate that croc dude from 'Animal Planet', but I don't think it's gonna go farther than 'mate'.
