"During one cruise in the Sea of Japan in the 1980s, the B-39 was running on the surface charging its batteries when an American Oliver Hazard Perry frigate came into view. The B-39 elected to remain surfaced. The Cold War was drawing to a close, and the fear of an American frigate attacking a Soviet craft in international waters was not as great as in the 1960s. The frigate closed in on the Foxtrot, and the B-39's officer of the deck notified the captain of the visitor. Soon, both ships were cruising close aboard within 200-yds, and then two nude American sailors came out on the aft flight deck. They then threw a bucket into the ice-cold Sea of Japan, and hoisted it back aboard. Pouring the ice cold water on themselves, they then proceeded to demonstrate "muscle-man stances" for the crew of the Russian submarine. Within minutes, however, the show had to end due to freezing conditions, and the sailors attempted to re-enter the ship's hatchway. Pranksters on the inside had locked them out, and then the cold-blue American sailors began to beg and dance around the deck. The Foxtrot crew broke up laughing, and then felt sorry for the American "he-men." Finally, the frigate's crew took pity on the nearly frozen men, and allowed them back into the warmth of the ship.
That was the day's entertainment for most of the B-39's crew as well as the frigate. A few moments later, it was back to the business of hunter versus the hunted. The B-39 submerged and disappeared, and no formal report was made of the onetime nudists! Other incidents such as this between American and Soviet vessels on the high seas took place, but have only been recorded in the memories of those who witnessed or participated."
