The role of the Swordfish soon began to alter. It was increasingly vulnerable while making its long slow torpedo dropping runs, while the number of good targets for it was dropping. With the appearance of the rocket armed Swordfish Mk III the aircraft gained a new role in anti submarine warfare, operating from a new generation of escort carriers. The first success with the new weapon came on 13 May 1943, when Swordfish launched from HMS Archer sank U-752.
