NASA experimented with several designs while trying to determine the best way to maintain the temperature inside the LM. Rather than incorporate a heavy environmental control system like the one in the CSM, NASA decided to insulate the LM so that it acted like a giant thermos. It worked like a charm -- the LM's average temperature varied between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit (between 18.3 and 21.1 degrees Celsius) during lunar operations. The inside cabin pressure had to be brought up to a life-sustaining level; the crew had to remove the big back packs that had sustained their life during the moon walk, and they had to get ready to jettison some of the equipment they would not take back to earth with them.
Mission Control Center said the cabin pressure was raised to 5 pounds a square inch, and the temperature inside was 60 degrees (F).
