Out on the steppe our forces guarding the Sixth Army flanks are preparing for the long and arduous Russian winter. For far and wide there are no villages, trees, shrubs, or water supply but our troops dig caves in the sides of the bleak gullies to form stables, stores, and even field hospitals. Hitler himself has issued orders that he expects, "a highly active defense and a proud sense of victory." Panzers are to be protected by speciallyy built concrete bunkers and (150,000) horses, oxen, and camels, as well as the majority of the motor transport and repair units have been sent some (70) kilometers to the rear. Divisions are already placing orders for Christmas; musical instruments, party games, Christmas tree decorations, and candles.
For the troops inside Stalingrad Christmas is the last thing on their minds. The 62nd Army continues to harrass them day and night firing flares periodically to lend the impression that they are going to attack. Then, of course, there is the matter of the Red Air Force. The U-2 biplanes piloted by the female aviators, or, "Nightwitches", are the worst of the lot. Upon approaching our lines the planes have an eerie sound like that of a sewing machine, then, as they approach the target, the women switch off their engines and glide towards their prey, the only audible signature to their craft the sound of the air as it kneads through the bomb struts. The troops have numerous nicknames for these aircraft; "the duty NCO", "midnight bomber", "the coffee machine", "railroad crow", and, of course, "the sewing machine".
Following the loss of Feldwebel Matzdorf yesterday I have decieded to give 1./JG 3 some rest and arranged for your staffel to conduct night attacks against the main Soviet ferry landing. You and Unteroffizier Blaut will conduct a jabo attack against the latter area with (1x500kg) SC bombs with the primary objective of eliminating Soviet T-34's that have just disembarked from the latest ferry supplying the 62nd Army. Following this patrol north of the target area in search of Soviet night bombers at an altitude of approximatly (500m).

Там, в степи, наши войска, защищающие фланги 6-й армии, готовятся к долгой и тяжёлой русской зиме. Там, вдали, нет ни деревень, ни даже деревьев и кустарника, но наши войска роют пещеры на склонах оврагов, располагая в них конюшни, склады и даже полевые госпитали. Гитлер выпустил приказ, в котором заявил, что ожидает "высокой активности в обороне и гордого чувства победы". Танки должны быть защищены специальными бетонными бункерами, а 150000 лошадей, волов и верблюдов вместе с большей частью автомобилей и ремонтных подразделений отосланы примерно на 70 км в тыл. Дивизии уже высылают заказы на Рождество: музыкальные инструменты, ёлочные украшения и свечи...
Для войск, оставшихся в городе Рождества, похоже не будет. 62-я армия русских продолжает гвоздить по ним днём и ночью, время от времени выпуская осветительные ракеты и делая вид, что собирается атаковать. Естественно, остаётся проблема с красными ВВС. Бипланы У-2, ведомые женщинами, "ночными ведьмами" - наша самая страшная головная боль. На подлёте к нашим оборонительным линиям эти самолёты жутко тарахтят, подобно гигантским швейным машинам, подлетая к цели, они выключают двигатели и бесшумно планируют к своей добыче. Единственный звук, который можно услышать - это свист воздуха в стабилизаторах их бомб. Солдаты уже придумали им множество прозвищ: "дежурный фельдфебель", "полуночный бомбер", "кофемолка", "ворон железных дорог", ну и "швейная машинка", естественно.
После вчерашней гибели фельдфебеля Матцдорфа я решил дать 1./JG 3 небольшой отдых. Ночью Ваш штаффель должен совершить налёт на главную советскую пристань в этом районе. Вы и унтер-офицер Блаут вылетаете сейчас же, задача - с помощью 500-кг бомб уничтожить советские Т-34, которые только что выгрузились с парома, который снабжает 62-ю армию. После этого вы будете патрулировать зону к северу от района цели на высоте порядка 500 м с задачей обнаруживать и уничтожать ночные бомбардировщики противника.
