Spitfire camera mountings for photographic reconnaissance. Basically there were two types of mounting: vertical or oblique, the latter for low-altitude photography. The drawing here shows both types of camera mountings with one oblique and two vertical although; so far as is known, no Spitfire in service ever carried cameras for both oblique and vertical photography at the same time because access to the lower cameras for servicing would have been very awkward. The vertical cameras shown here were two F24s and this was known as the X fitting; if two smaller F8 cameras were installed this was known as the W fitting and the majority of PR Spitfires used for medium-high altitude reconnaissance had one of these two fitments.
