On June 25, 1958 the Army issued an invitation for a General Management Proposal for the US Army Medium Transport Helicopter. Five aircraft manufacturers submitted proposals for the project. Vertol was selected to produce the YCH-1B as the Army's new medium transport helicopter. The first Vertol prototype, called the YHC-1A, was tested by the Army to derive engineering and operational data. Three aircraft were built with a maximum troop capacity of twenty. This model eventually became Vertol's commercial 107 and the Marine Sea Knight. However, the YHC-1A was considered by most of the Army users to be too heavy for the assault role and too light for the transport role. The decision was made to procure a heavier transport helicopter and at the same time upgrade the Huey as a tactical troop transport. This decision was to determine the pattern of airmobile operations for the next decade. As a consequence, the Army concept of air assault operations differed from the Marines because, among many reasons, the very nature of the equipment demanded different methods of employment.Сообщение от XaHyMaH

Да это по сути тот же Ми-18, только с рампой, у которого за счет движков тонну грузоподъемности подняли. Точно так же как и ВК-2500 тонну дает при замене с ТВ3-117ВМА. Единственно из-за чего можно было бы его считать абсолютно новым это новая втулка, но опять же профиль остался тот же, редуктор тот же. Если хотите можете назвать его новым в рамках понитий современной РФ. При СССР его бы так никогда не назвали бы.
