FINAL REPORT ON TACTICAL SUITABILITY OF THE P-38F TYPE AIRPLANE
    6 March 1943

    http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.o...al-trials.html

Against the P-39D, P-51, and the P-40F, the P-38F had a longer radius of turn below twelve-thousand (12,000) feet. From twelve-thousand (12,000) feet to approximately fifteen-thousand (15,000) feet, the radius was almost the same, and from fifteen-thousand (15,000) feet on up, the P-38F had a equal or shorter radius of turn. In the initial turn, due to the slowness of aileron roll of the P-38F, the other types could roll into a turn faster and close up the circle rapidly before the P-38F would reach its maximum radius of turn. It would then take the P-38F sometime, if ever, to overcome this initial disadvantage. The P-38F’s best maneuver against all types tested was to climb rapidly out of range and then turn and commence the combat from a superior altitude. Once gaining this altitude it should retain it, making passes and climbing again rapidly. Knowledge of the local enemy fighter performance will dictate the tactics to be used by the P-38F in the combat zone. It is doubtful if this aircraft will meet in combat any type of enemy aircraft in which close-in fighting will be its best offensive action.

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT ON TACTICAL SUITABILITY OF THE P-38G TYPE AIRPLANE AS COMPARED TO THE P-38F
    3 May 1943

    http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.o...al-trials.html

    3. Conclusions: It is concluded that:

    a. All conclusions and recommendations applying to the P-38F, apply to the P-38G.

    b. Inasmuch as the general maneuverability of this aircraft is probably the lowest of any type of current fighter aircraft, and in view of the competition facing the P-38G in the European Theatre, all possible effort should be made to improve its rate of climb and high speed.

    c. The P-38G turns much better than the P-38F (will close 180° in 360° circle) due to maneuver flaps.

    FLIGHT TESTS
    OF A P-38J AIRPLANE

    http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.o...-38-67869.html

    F. Maneuverability

The airplane is highly maneuverable considering the high wing loading. It has a fairly large radius of turn for a fighter but this is greatly improved by the use of maneuvering flaps. Response to controls in rolls, loops, immelmans is good and these maneuvers are easily executed.

    f. Maneuverability

The airplane is very maneuverable, although the forces for executing turns is high. The radius of turn is fair without maneuvering flaps and good with flaps. The rate of roll is fair. Response to the controls in making side slips, loops, and rolls, is positve and effective.

Роль maneuvering flaps подчеркивается для всех самолётов, кроме первого P-38F, на котором они не стояли. Также отлично заметно что авторы отчетов отнюдь не в восторге от манеренности P-38.
